Ghana Tertiary Education Commission – GTEC

Our Regulator for today is the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (“GTEC”). GTEC is governed by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) and it is responsible for accreditation and certification of Tertiary Educational institutions in Ghana.
The institutions that are required to register with Board are as follows:

  • Private Universities;
  • Public Universities;
  • Technical or vocational training institutions;
  • Professional Training Institutions;
  • Chartered Private Tertiary Institutions;
  • Diploma awarding Institutions;
  • Teacher Training Institutions;
  • Nursing and Midwifery Training Institutions; and
  • Foreign Tertiary institutions seeking to operate in Ghana.

The GTEC is mandated by the Acts to accredit and certify the above institutions and no tertiary educational institution can operate in Ghana unless it has applied to and acquired the appropriate Certificate from them. GTEC is also responsible for the accreditation of all programmes run by these educational institutions whether or not that programme is already accredited by a foreign country.
Failure to register with the GTEC before commencing operations is an offence punishable by a term of imprisonment of not more than 15 years or a fine of at most GHS 240,000 or both.
It is important to note that the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB) have been merged under the new Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) to form the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission
